The country traces it’s history back to 976 A.D. when the Margravate of Austria was established. The Duchy of Austria followed this in 1156. In 1804 an Austrian Empire came into being and in 1918 a republic was proclaimed.
The annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945 meant that the country's status remained unclear for a decade.
A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized its independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal.
Now a prosperous and democratic country it is made up of 9 states Bundeslaender, Burgenland, Kaernten (Carinthia), Niederoesterreich , Oberoesterreich, Salzburg, Steiermark, Tirol, Vorarlberg and Wien (Vienna)
Famous for its spectacular mountain scenery and fairytale castles its lowest point is Neusiedler See at 115 meters above sea level and the highest point is Grossglockner at 3,798 meters above sea level.

Salzburg also boasts the Festung Hohensalzburg atop the Mönchsberg. This impressive fortress offers a fabulous view over the valley below.
The capital city Vienna hugs both sides of the “Blue” Danube that is actually muddy brown. Here you could visit magnificent buildings, such as the State Opera House, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Natural History, the residence of the Empress Elizabeth the Hofburg, the Parliament, the City Hall, and the Burgtheater.
You could visit the Hapsburg’s Schonbrunn Palace, which is the former summer residence of the Imperial Family, and considered to be one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe.
Emperor Franz Joseph was born here in 1830. The monarch spent his last years entirely in the palace, which became the property of the new Republic two years after his death.
Today, the palace is part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage due to its historic importance, its unique grounds and its splendid furnishings.
You could ride the Giant Ferris Wheel, which is an impressive landmark of Vienna.
