Bargain City Breaks - Barcelona Nou Camp Football Tour Catalonia Ramblas Hotels

<<

>>

Bargain City breaks Barcelona Catalonia can be exactly what you want them to be.

Here in this passionate capital and unforgettable city where you can enjoy style, culture and beauty.

You can tailor make your Getaway.

Originally an Iberian fishing village, named Barkeno, Barcino or Barceloneta.

It has grown and developed into the vibrant modern city you see today.

Its population of under 1.7 million speaks both Spanish and Catalan.

At its center is the Plaça Catalunya or the Square of Catalonia and from here everything radiates out. From here you can more or less go anywhere in the city. You will find plenty of taxis, buses and there is a metro station here. You can also join the hop on hop off tourist bus at this square. It is also the center of the shopping district.

Just down from the Plaça Catalunya is Catalonia Ramblas hotels, markets, shops and street entertainers can all be found here as you stroll down its length.

The word ‘Las Ramblas’ come from the Arabic word for ‘dry flowers’. In the 19Century this was the only place in Barcelona that flowers were sold. Today the flowers sit along side the traditional bird market, kiosks and stalls selling all kinds of items.

At the end of ‘Las Ramblas’ is the 60 meters high monument to Christopher Columbus, which was erected in 1888. It is located at the site where Columbus returned to Spain after his first voyage to the Americas.

Just off from here is the Old Town and its Roman ruins. A leisurely walk through this quarter is a must. Plaça Nova is the place where the old city was born and you will find the sculptured letters Barcino in the square.

In fact central Barcelona is ideal for a walking tour of the city and the hop on hop off bus is great for an overview of the city and takes in most of the main visitor attractions from Gaudi's works to a Nou Camp tour of the city’s football stadium.

To get the best of the city I would advise that you bought a good pocket guide and did a little research before your visit.

Again just off the Ramblas, is the Plaza Real which was erected in mid of the 19th Century. It is a fine arcade with palm trees and lamps designed by Gaudi.

The Cathederal of the Sagrada Familia is the worldwide symbol of Barcelona and is Gaudi's most famous work. The architect began the task of building this church in 1883 and dedicated his life to it until his sudden death left it unfinished. Today, the finished parts are open to visitors as is the small Museu del Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família. The towers can also be visited and offer amazing views of the city. Work continues on the building.

Gaudi buildings are dotted around the city and include Casa Mila or La Pedrera and cover an area of more than 100 square meters this is known for its rooftop, which shows a large group of surrealistic chimney pots.

Park Guell is another work by Gaudi and is a network of twisting paths and walkways that follow the contours of the land and has no straight lines. The lowest point of the park is the entrance, from which a double staircase leads to a hypostyle chamber, the ceiling of which serves as the floor of the huge public square above.

Other places of interest are:

The fourteenth century Gothic Church of Santa Maria del Mar famed for its stained glass windows.

The Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Picasso Museum.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu which is considered by many to be one of the finest opera houses in Europe.

No visit to Barcelona can be complete without a visit to the citadel of football the Nou Camp home of FC Barcelona. The stadium has a capacity of 110,000 people and on match days practically every seat is taken.

A tour of the stadium and museum is a must for all football fans.

Barcelona will live up to your expectations.
