Drive Highway One to Big Sur Things To Do In Beautiful California

<<

>>

Voted one of the world’s most scenic routes highway one California is a beautiful drive.

And highway one Big Sur is one area on the route worth stopping at.

The whole route from Monterey to Santa Barbara is a wonderful drive with plenty of interesting stops on the way.

Things to see at various stops include such things as wildlife refuges, a seal sanctuary, state parks and beautiful beaches.

Along the route there are many hiking trails along the coast or up into the hills. The mild climate and diverse terrain make hiking a very popular activity.

If you’re not sure what there is to do take a look at these suggestion on California Big Sur things to do by our guest writer Suzi.

5 FREE THINGS TO DO IN BIG SUR

I don't know about you, but even during bountiful times I think it's fun to discover things we can do without spending much money. And right now, it's imperative that we find free things to do! So here are 5 of my favorite Big Sur free things for you to try:

  1. Relax! It's the Number One thing to do in Big Sur!! Relax on the beach; relax amongst the redwoods; relax along the Big Sur River; relax in the wilderness. Take advantage of the Big Sur laid-back vibe, bring a picnic, find yourself a quiet spot, & leave your worries behind you.
  2. Browse the Henry Miller Library, the shops of Big Sur Village, the many art & jewelry galleries; explore Nepenthe & the Phoenix Shop; visit the State Parks & the historical sites; take a ranger-guided walk. Looking & listening doesn't cost a penny!
  3. Take a drive & enjoy the views - not just along the coast, but take the little side & back roads, wind in and out of the hidden neighborhoods. You'll discover some beautiful homes with lovely landscaping and other secret treasures that most people miss.
  4. Go for a hike - along the river, along the beach, into the redwood forest, atop the ridges. While hiking, keep your senses alert for the other critters that share Big Sur with us - hundreds of species of birds, including the California Condor; whales, otters, & many other varieties of sealife; deer, banana slugs, coyotes, mountain lions & more!
  5. Visit the well-preserved Mission San Antonio de Padua - it's a bit of an effort to get there, but well worth the trip! It was one of the most successful of the Spanish missions, and it resides in a pristine setting of idyllic grassland, creeks, & live oaks - looking much as all the missions looked during the 18th Century.

So there you have it - 5 varied & interesting free things to do in Big Sur, California! And in these economically uncertain times, free things can mean the difference between exploring your world & being stuck at home!

Thanks Suzi for those tips.

They are even better when they're free.

Every year many thousands of tourists are attracted to this area and one popular vacation activity is to drive from San Francisco down the coast road to Los Angeles or vise versa.

The peaceful atmosphere and tranquil setting also makes the area a perfect camping and RV destination with Kirk Creek and Plasket Creek being two of the most beautiful spots.

Whether you are looking for an exciting trip for the family, an outdoor escape from the daily grind, or a romantic trip overlooking beautiful landscapes, you will find it here.

Another contributor has this to say ...

"The no. 1 highway drive was certainly very dramatic with the hills coming right down to the coastline, which is also dramatic, rocky and rugged.

There were viewing points along the highway at quite regular intervals and at one of these highway pull offs there were lots of seals that we watched for quite a while.

The drive itself is not very long but because the road is twisty and you have to drive fairly slowly. But this allows you to take in the wonderful scenery on route 1."
