This visit Cyprus online page is to give you a brief introduction to the Island and its attractions.

It is situated in the northeastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, 75km south of Turkey, 105km west of Syria, 380km north of Egypt and 380km east of Rhodes.

It enjoys a Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and rainy, quite mild winters.

It enjoys year-round clear skies and sunshine.

Although having a history of division between the Greek and Turkish inhabitants the entire island entered the European Union on 1 May 2004.

The modern day country is dominated by Western European culture, but its geographic nearness to Asia and Africa brings more than a hint of other cultures. This is why Cyprus holidays direct flights and attractions are so popular.

A major international cultural festival is held each year during the months of September-October in Kypria. The festival and the differnt attractions draw many artists from opera, theatre, music, dance, cinema and folk art to the island.



Cyprus attractions include those on the UNESCO official World Heritage List.

These attractions and sites are the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, the antiquities of Pafos, the Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia and Byzantine churches in Troodos.

The famous Sanctuary of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and fertility, was officially established on Cyprus in fifteen hundred BC, with a hilltop temple overlooking the sea.

The Sanctuary of Aphrodite continued to flourish under the Romans. And Titus visited it in 69 AD.

The cult of Aphrodite survived until; Emperor Theodosius outlawed paganism in the 4th century AD.

What remains today is from a roman reconstruction in the 1st century AD, after a devastating earthquake.

There is the Leda Mosaic House and the site museum is housed in La Cavocle, a Lusignan manor that was the headquarters of the Medieval Crusaders'.

Among the exhibits are betyls or phallic monoliths, which were anointed with olive oil by local women well into modern times. Gallery II displays finds from Palea Paphos in chronological order, including a huge chalk bathtub (complete with soap dish) dating from the 11th century BC.

The Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia is situated in the valley of the Saint Minas’s River, in the foothills of Toodos, only six kilometres from the sea.

The settlement dates back to the sixth millennium BC and was revealed to the modern world in nineteen hundred and thirty four.

The main road of the settlement is a narrow and long stone construction running some 185 meters in length. On each side of the road were round houses with stone bases and an upper part of adobe and mud. The roofs were branches and straw covered in mud. There was a fireplace at the centre of the house. The interiors of the houses were decorated with murals.

The Troodos mountain range stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus. This is the region where you will find a large group of churches and monasteries from the Byzantine Empire.

The Byzantine Empire is the term used to describe the Greek-speaking Roman Empire during the middle Ages.



Other attractions and Cyprus things to do and see are explore the small villages of the Akamas Peninsula, sunbathe on the golden beaches of the Karpas (Kırpaşa) Peninsula.

Hike the magnificent Troödos mountains and explore the islands rugged coastline.

Visit the medieval castles with their medieval history and sparkeling island views.
