Trier is the country's oldest city and is located in Mosel River Valley. It is home to the stunning Porta Nigra, the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps.
West Germany was a founding member of the European Community in 1957, which then became the European Union in 1993.
Germany shares its borders with Denmark in the north, Belgium and the Netherlands in the north-west, Poland and the Czech Republic in the east, Austria and Switzerland in the south and France and Luxembourg in the south-west.

Berchtesgaden National Park will also, appeal to outdoor lovers and here is where you will find the famous “Eagle’s Nest”, the mountain retreat that was the refuge of Hitler in the World War II.
The German Rhine and its banks is a popular holiday destination. A cruise is a great way to discover its treasures of castles, cathedrals and vineyards all set in a beautiful countryside.
Potsdam is a beautiful baroque city, which during the 18th and 19th centuries was the home of the Prussian kings. You can see their magnificent palaces set in Sanssouci Park.
Other areas to visit are The German Black Forest, Teutoburg Forest, Erzgebirge and Fichtelgebirge Mountains, Sauerland and Spessart.
Then there is the world famous Oberammergau Passion Play which came about because in 1632 Oberammergau suffered an outbreak of the "Black Death" or Black Plague.
It killed 20% of the population.
To prevent such a terrible misfortune from happening again the villagers of Oberammergau vowed to God that they would perform a Passion Play every 10 years forever. To this day this promise has been upheld.
German holidays and vacations in cities and states can be varied and immensely enjoyable.
