Kathmandu Travel City Tourism Guide Visit Nepal From UK - USA - Europe and Asia

<<>>

Kathmandu travel is best undertaken in October/November and March/April, when the weather is warm and mostly sunny, and the air is crisp and clear.

Nepal Kathmandu travel is at its height during these periods.

Kathmandu tourism is big business at this time of year.

And there are many internal tourists visiting the sites.

The city is a starting and finishing point for many independent travellers undertaking adventure trips in Nepal like trekking, rafting and mountain climbing.

And of course Kathmandu City attracts Nepalese travellers.

To get the best out of this capital city a good Kathmandu Guide is essential. Get yours here.

The city once one of the world's most inaccessible destinations has travel links to most places. Kathmandu UK, USA, Europe, and the rest of Asia is well served. And there is a range of accommodation for all budgets from bed barns to five star luxury at ordinary prices.

Nepal tourism and travel is best avoided for the ordinary traveler in Winter (November to February) as it is exceedingly cold, while early summer (May and June) is swelteringly hot and humid. Monsoon rains drench the city between June and September.

So the window to visit and enjoy good weather is fairly small.

Nestling in the Kathmandu Valley, the city is surrounded by agricultural fields and amazing terraces. And to the north the snow-covered mountains of the Himalays dominate it.

It really is three cities: Kathmandu the capital; Patan, which has been enveloped by a growing Kathmandu, and the medieval city of Bhaktapur.

Most of the country's ethnic groups are represented in the Kathmandu area as is seen in the day-to-day life and the splendid art and architecture of all the different cultures, especially Buddhist and Hindu.

A bustling heaving city with souvenir sellers, market traders, beggars, rickshaws, taxis, wandering cows and inquisitive monkeys all vying for your attention.

The aroma of spices, incense and other things drifting into open squares surrounded by temples of all shapes and sizes, is an experience not to be missed.

Kathmandu highlights.

Durbar Square is the religious and social heart of Kathmandu’s old city and is a complex of palaces, temples, shrines, statues and courtyards built between the 12th and 18th centuries by the ancient kings of Nepal.

Stone lions guard the gates to the Old Royal Palace that contains a number of courtyards and several museums.

On the palace wall is a 17th-century stone inscription written in 15 languages and it is said that milk will flow from the spout below if anyone can decipher the entire inscription.

Here you will find Brahman priests and painted Sadhus perform rituals and pose for photographs for a few Rupees.

On the other side of the square is the Kasthamandap temple thought to have been made from the wood of a single tree. It is said to be the Valley’s oldest building, and the city derives its name from this ancient temple.

Kathmandu travel is easy and safe and the people of different religions get along just fine.

One of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal is the 5th-century Swayambhu stupa and its golden spire is adorned with colourful fluttering prayer flags.

It is one of the most recognisable symbols in Nepal and the painted eyes of Buddha watch all those who ascend the worn stone steps. It is a World Heritage Site.

Many pilgrims, red-clad monks and tourists circle the complex, spinning the prayer wheels, to the gaze of scores of monkeys that give the temple its nickname, Monkey Temple.

Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in the world, and is devoted to Shiva, it attracts thousands of Hindi pilgrims each year. Shiva is the patron deity of Nepal.

The Temple stands on the banks of the holy Bagmati River, which is a tributary of the Ganges.

It really is a temple complex renowned for its beautiful architecture in numerous temples, shrines, statues and pagodas.

The site is home to Kathmandu's cremation platforms spread along the river where the bodies of Hindus are burnt and the ashes scattered into the holy river.

You will find Brahman priests attending the funeral pyres and painted Sadhus (Holy Men) everywhere.

15 km from the city is Changu Narayan Temple which is situated on a ridge overlooking the Kathmandu Valley.

The temple is believed to be 1,600 years old and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu.

The complex is known for its incredible woodcarvings, metal inscriptions and stone statues.

35km east of Kathmandu is Bhaktapur, the capital of the Kathmandu Valley during the 14th to 16th centuries.

It is also known as the City of Devotees.

The whole town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s a marvellous place filled with palaces, temples, statues and squares connected by a maze of largely pedestrian-only streets.

The main central square, Durbar Square, has many attractions, including the Golden Gate, the 15th-century Palace of 55 Windows and statues of ancient kings.

The second main square of Taumadhi is presided over by the graceful Nyatpola Temple, the tallest in the Valley with a five-story platform.

A Kathmandu travel experience will leave you enriched in many different ways.
