The world's highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, is located along its border with Bolivia at an altitude of 3,812 meters. The lake measures 190 kilometres by 80 kilometres and covers an area of around 58000 square kilometres. Lake Titicaca is a sacred place for the Inca civilization and the ancient Incan story tells of the first Inca king, Manco Capac, being born here. According to the Incan mythology, this is where the world was created, when the god Viracocha came out of the lake and created the sun, the stars and the first people on the earth. Islands in the lake near Puno worth a visit are the floating Uros Islands together with the islands of Taquile and Amantani. Another site nearby is the Sillustani towers and is well worth a visit. There is the train for transport between Cusco and the city of Puno on the shore of the lake. An experience not to be missed.The small town of Nazca is the stopping of point for viewing the world-famous Nazca Lines. These are a series of extensive lines and figures etched into the surface of the planet and are best viewed from the air. The purpose of these mysterious lines, which were declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1994 is still debated.
The capital city Lima is an expansive desert city clouded in a man made perpetual fog. The city holds many ancient treasures but is really best seen on a short visit to the main attractions. The countrys' second largest city is Arequipa, which is well known for its glistening white buildings made from sillar, a white volcanic rock, which gives the city its nickname 'La Ciudad Blanca' or 'The White City'. Three volcanoes; El Misti, still active at 5822m, the higher and extinct Chachani 6075m and Pichu Pichu 5571m surround the city. The El Misti volcano can be climbed in two or three days but the climb to the top can be hard work due to the thin air. The El Misti climb, in fact, is one of the easiest ascents of any mountain of this size in the world. The mountainous region of the Cordillera Blanca is the center for walking, hiking, trekking, mountain-biking and rock-climbing. This is the second highest mountain range in the world after the Himalayas, and boasts twenty two mountain summits of over 6000m.
