About Portugal Travel Guide Online Porto Airport Visit Lisbon Tours

<<>>

This online Portugal travel guide and tours is a brief overview of the country.

It is a county of roughly ten million people spread over three distinct regions;

the Iberian peninsular,

the Azores and

the Madeira Islands.

Spain is the only country-sharing its border.

Sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Spain and bordering the Atlantic Ocean with both the west and south coast, it is popular for its long and varied coastline, sunny climate and its charming towns and quaint villages.

It is a traveler’s paradise and no longer the Iberian Peninsula's best-kept secret as more and more visitors fall to its charms.

Portugal travel guides point out that the climate is split into two, the oceanic of the north and the Mediterranean of the south. It has one of the warmest climates in Europe and is popular foe holidays and vacations. The average temperatures in the mainland are 13°C (55°F) in the north and 18°C (64°F) in the south.

The Azores is a beautiful nine-island archipelago with a total area of 910 square miles set in the Atlantic Ocean. These volcanic islands are doted with volcanic cones and craters. The Pico volcano that stands 7725 feet (2,351 meters) high on the island of the same name has the highest altitude in the Azores. It has a moderate climate with mild annual temperatures. They are about two hours flying time from Lisbon and Ponta Delgada is the largest city.

The island of Madeira is blessed with warm comfortable summers and mild winters that make it an alluring all year round holiday destination. They say Madeira is never too hot or too cold. The Island is 310 miles from the African coast and 620 miles from Europe, and it is 1 hour 30 minutes flight time from Lisbon.

The Southern province of the Algarve is situated on the coast with 155 kilometres of the south-facing coastline and about 52 kilometres on the west-facing coastline. Popular with European tourists it has around a hundred beautiful sandy beaches washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Sea temperature can often be surprisingly warm even in the winter months and this adds to its attraction. It is said that this region has possibly the most unpolluted climate in Europe. There is one international airport located close to Faro, which is conveniently situated in the centre of the Algarve coastline.

Tours Lisbon Portugal or Lisboa on the west coast is the picturesque capital and a Lisbon visit has many attractions.

Portugal Porto airport is a gateway to the country and is also a historic city with roman ramparts and parisian-style squares. Porto is worth the travel time spent there.

Coimbra with the ancient university and its maze of medieval streets sits above the Rio Mondego. The former capital in the 12th and 13th centuries makes a great base for vacations.

Braga is another university town, which is compared in a small way with Rome because of it’s many Baroque churches and its twelfth century cathedral that is the oldest in the country.

Portugal is one of the oldest nations in Europe and in the twelfth century it gained its independence from the other kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula. In the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to sail to Africa, the distant Orient and to the heart of South America.

It is true that the country’s past has made it into what it is today a state drawn from many influences.

It has an old world charm, with medieval castles and beautiful villages strewn over its flower-covered hillsides and meadows. These villages perched high on the hilltops retain the rural traditions of bygone days and are wonderful peaceful places to meander around.

The Peneda-Geręs National Park spreads over 703-sq-km and shares 80km of frontier with Spain. It is a place of outstanding beauty. Established in 1971 you will find forests of oak and fragrant pine, gorse-covered moorlands and impressive boulder-strewn peaks some rise to over 1500m. Scattered throughout the park are more than a hundred medievil granite built villages.

One thing about online tour guides is you can read them quickly to get a flavour of a country to see if it appeals.

I hope you have found this brief Portugal online travel tour beneficial and it has encouraged you to visit the cities or one of the many attractions for Portuguese fun.
