San Francisco stole Tony Bennett’s heart and it will steal yours too.

Its famous hills are home to diverse districts with individual characters and a visit to them will enrich your travel experience.

You could begin your tour by hopping on a cable car at Union Square in the hotel and shopping area. Which is named after the pro-Union demonstrations on the eve of the American Civil War.

In this area you will find jazz and blues clubs, theatres, restaurants and cafes

The cable cars head up Powell Street past many flower-stalls and on to the world-famous Fisherman’s Wharf.

Souvenir shops, sea-food restaurants, sourdough bread bakeries and museums line your way as you head for the sightseeing boats and boat charters to visit Alcatraz prison island, Angel Island, Sausalito and other points around San Francisco Bay.

Don’t forget Pier 39 and the sea lions.

You’ll love the noise and the smell!

If you do a bay cruise and go under the ‘Golden Gate Bridge’ you could impress your fellow passengers by telling them the bridge is painted orange for greater visibility in the fog or ‘San Francisco Sunshine’.

It was said that the bridge could never be built.

The strait was too wide, the ocean too powerful and it would cost too much money.

When the bridge was opened in 1937, it not only proved the critics wrong but also quickly became the proud symbol of San Francisco. When you come off the water why not cycle over the bridge to Sausalito and catch the ferry back to the city to enjoy its wonderful skyline.

As you cycle be sure to visit the Golden Gate Park which is the largest man-made park in the world.

Call in at Nob Hill once the home of the silver kings and railroad barons and admire the real estate.

Also, Russian Hill, named for burial sites of Russian hunters who were active in California waters in the early 1800s.

For marvellous views climb the Coit Tower at the top of Telegraph Hill.

This hill is also home to a flock of wild parrots and its name stems from earlier days when a semaphore was used to signal the arrival of a ship through the Golden Gate strait.

Walk down Lombard Street, which is “the most crooked street in the world”, and watch the cars negotiate the bends.

Visit Grace Cathedral, which is a replica of Notre Dame in Paris.

Enter Chinatown at Grant Avenue (the oldest street in the city) and Bush Street through the "Dragon's Gate."

Take a walking tour to fully appreciate this city, of 24 densely populated blocks, within a city. Stroll around exotic shops, tea bars, food markets, dim-sum stalls, temples and small museums.

Explore the many side alleys and buy yourself a fortune cookie.
