The 'Home of Golf' boasts some of the best and most beautiful golf courses in the world.

The question is where to start.

Gretna's famous runaway marriages began in 1753 after a marriage act raised the age in england. In scotland it was 14 years for boys and 12 years old for girls with or without parental consent. Since 1929 both parties have had to be at least 16 years old but there is still no consent needed.

In the South East is the River Tweed valley where you can explore many castles, small towns and villages set in a gentle countryside. Here is some of the world’s best fishing.

Edinburgh is said to be the Athens of the north and Robert Louis Stevenson said , “ Edinburgh is what Paris ought to be”.

Here the new town is old and the medievil old town is filled with nooks and crannies that are filled with history.

The Royal Mile leads you up to Edinburgh Castle and its scottish treasures. This is the venue of the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Edinburgh is also well known for its annual festival and new year celebrations, Hogmanay.

The Forth Road and Rail Bridges are engineering wonders and dominate the land around them and leads to the Kingdom of Fife the ancestral home of Scottish monarchs. Here you will also find the world-famous Royal and Ancient golf club

To the west stands the reborn Glasgow which is the gateway to some fantastic scenery up the west coast of Scotland. Just outside the city is Paisley home of the famous fabric pattern.

The Firth of Clyde gives magnificent sailing and the mountains that border it is popular for cyclists and walkers.

From Ardrossan you can cross by ferry to the Isle of Arran which is known as 'Scotland in miniature'.

The many Islands of Scotland are scattered across the sea as jewels.

Lewis and Harris which is actually one island in the Hebrides. In these islands the gaelic culture is strong and the language is spoken by the majority.

Harris is where the world-famous Harris Tweed is made. Other great sounding islands such as Barra, Benbecula, North Uist and South Uist are all worth a visit.

The world heritage site of St Kilda with it’s history and sea bird population is another good visit depending of course on the weather conditions.

Skye with it’s famous cullins and the marvelous rock formations of it’s Trotternish peninsula is a magnet for visitors and even more so since the bridge linked it with the mainland.

Orkney is where you will find Scapa Flow where the German marine fleet was scuttled at the end of the First World War. This is now popular as a diving destination.

If you go by ferry boat you will sail past the red stone -stack of the Old Man of Hoy, then on past the cliffs of St John's Head which are the highest vertical cliffs in the UK.

Part of mainland Orkney is a World Heritage Site because of the many prehistoric sites that have been found.

At Maeshowe there is a large tomb some 5000 years old. visitors wonder at the skills of stone masons who built this years ago.

At Stenness and Brodgar are prehistoric stone circles and at Skara Brae you will find a sunken Neolithic settlement , overlooking the Bay of Skaill.

Orkney also boasts the world's shortest scheduled flight which is 2 minutes, between Westray and Papa Westray.

Often thought more Norwegian than scottish the Shetlands are dominated by the sea. The most inland point is only three miles from the sea. Here you can when conditions are right get good displays of the Northern Lights.

The Viking influence is heard in the local dialect and the names of places. And on the last Tuesday of January, this connection is celebrated at the annual fire festival, Up Helly Aa.

The world's biggest fire festival.

A torchlight procession drags a Viking longship through the streets and then sets the ship alight.

The Highlands of Scotland is a true great wilderness with cities and towns scattered throughout.

Here Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, sits surrounded by Mountains, Munroes, Hills, Valleys, Glens Rivers and Lochs.

There are miles and miles of true outstanding natural beauty.

Around Fort William 'the Outdoor Capital of the UK' you will find world-class mountaineering, climbing, biking and hiking.

From here is the 'Road to the Isles' running on to Mallaig and to Skye.

No visit to Scotland would be complete without seeing Glencoe, the traditional Highland Games or listening to Burns Poetry.

You could sample the 'water of life' and visit the eight distilleries and cooperage on the world's only Malt Whisky trail.

Then there are travel places like Scotland Glencoe, the Cairngorms, Grampian Mountains, Perthshire, The Great Glen and the wild life.
