The country's regions were united and made Christian under Isabel and Ferdinand. This led to the Spanish Inquisition, when thousands of Jews and Moors who wouldn’t convert were expelled or killed.

The discovery of America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus helped Spain to become one of the most powerful nations of the day as great treasure was shipped back to Espana.

Its more modern history has seen conflict between a Republican government and a Nationalist opposition, led by General Franco. That gave rise to the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).

A period of separation under Franco followed but when he died in 1975 a constitutional monarchy was established within a democratic country. Spain became member of the NATO in 1985 and entered the European Community in 1986.

Andalusia has over 3000 hours of sun per year and many miles of golden sandy beaches on its popular Costa de Almeria, Costa de la Luz and Costa del Sol. Not only is there spectacular coastline but also beautiful mountain ranges with the famous "white villages" scattered across them. Many tours visit these each year.The region is also renowned for Flamenco and Bullfighting. The major cities of the area are Almeria, Cadiz, Cordoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaen, Jerez, Malaga, Ronda and Seville. Aragon has spectacular mountain ranges up to the Pyrenees an area for skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer. The notable cities are Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza

Asturia is home of high mountain ranges as well as beautiful coastal areas. Outstanding natural areas such as the Picos de Europa are well known for day tours . The Way of Saint James passes through. The main cities are – Aviles, Gijon and Oviedo.

Balearic Islands is made up of the isles of Cabrera, Formentera, Mallorca, Minorca and Pitiusas. These islands are popular for holidays as the have over 300 days of sunshine per year. Palma de Mallorca airport caters for the most passengers in all of Spain.

Basque Country is an industrialized region but still has many areas of natural beauty. The three major cities in this region are Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Canary Islands are an archipelago of volcanic rock which over time has evolved into a popular destination because of its good year round climate. A Stop off for Christopher Columbus on his voyage of discovery it is made up of seven large islands El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, Lanzarote, La Palma and Tenerife. The other smaller islands are Alegranza, Clara, Graciosa, Lobos, Montaña, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste.

Cantabria is full of nature’s wonders and home to eagles, bears and wolves. The medieval town of Santillana del Mar is a beautiful jewel and the main city is Santander.

Castilla-La Mancha at the center of the Iberian peninsula is known for its spanish windmills made famous by Cervante's "Man from La Mancha - Don Quijote “. Distinctive slate villages, saffron fields and castles mark out this region as a tourist’s paradise. The cities here are Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo.

Castilla y Leon is the largest region and has many cathedrals, monasteries, castles and fortified towns. Cities here are Avila, Burgos, Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid and Zamora. The largest lake in Spain Lago de Sanabria, is also found in the region.

Catalonia has the beautiful Costa’s Brava and Dorada, the spanish Pyrenees and a wonderful mild climate. It has a distinct culture and a language of its own. Extremadura with its Roman past can sometimes be overlook by the tourist. Merida in the region was one of the most important cities in the whole Roman Empire. Today the main cities are Badajoz, Caceres, Guadalupe, Merida, Plasencia and Trujillo.

Galicia is known as the ‘land of the 1000 rivers’ and has the infamous coast of death. Celtic in origin the Romans left their mark here too. This where the world-famous pilgrimage, the Way of Saint James ends at Santiago de Compostela. Notable cities are A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.

Madrid is the capital of Spain is centrally located and is at altitude. Dating back to the Habsburg Empire it’s a destination in its own right.

Murcia on the warm coast was a Carthaginian colony, before being dominated by the Romans. The two important cities are Cartagena and Murcia.

Navarra is the region where the Running of Bulls takes place in the main city Pamplona. Other medieval towns such as Artajona, Roncesvalles and Tudela are worth a visit.

La Rioja is the center of wine production and gives its name to the very popular wine. The Tierra de Cameros offers outstanding landscapes, grottos and caves. Here the cities are Arnedo, Calahorra, Domingo de la Calzada, San Millan de la Cogolla, Santo and Logroño.

Valencia owes its existence to Phoenicians, Greeks, Iberians, Romans and Moors. The Costa Blanca and the Orange-Blossom-Coast are a big draw today and its cities are Alicante, Benidorm, Calpe, Castellon, Denia, Morella, Oropesa, Peniscola and Valencia.

Tasty spanish tapas, rich riojas, plates of paella, beautiful regions, history, culture and shimmering sunshine... Spain is a travelers dream and many tours appeal.
