stretches north to south a distance of 1,300 km, from the Torres Islands near Santa Cruz
in the Solomon Islands to the minuscule Matthew and Hunter Islands east of New Caledonia.
They are divided into three main groups:
The Torres and Banks Islands in the north with the Y-shaped central group of Espiritu Santo and Maewo to Efate and in the south are the Tafea islands.
You will find terrific Vanuatu vacations resorts, beautiful beaches, volcanoes and a pristine underwater environment, offering superb diving experiences. #
It is a snorkellers' and divers' Mecca.
There are over 113 distinct languages and many more dialects but only 3 official languages: English, French and Bislama (pidgin English).
This is one of the most culturally diverse countries on earth and it’s richness and diversity of culture is one of the primary reasons it is so popular with tourists who visit the different resorts.
The vast majority of visitors only see the three islands of Efate, Espiritu Santo, and Tanna.
These are home to the country's best-known resorts and sights, which include the country's only towns, Port Vila and Luganville.
Port Vila, the nations capital on the island of Efate, is home to the international airport and the main place for resort Vanuatu information for tourist.
It sits on the hillside around beautiful Vila bay and as you stroll around you will definitely notice the past french influence on the town.
There is no rush here so take your time spending the local currency ‘Vatu’ in or out of your resort.
Port Vila is where most things happen for the tourist with plenty of accomodation, resteraunts and bars to meet anyones needs. There are also lots of trips and tours available which cover most of the islands attractions.
Away from the capital the island has a great tourist road that hugs its coast.
On Espiritu Santo Island is said to be one of the South Pacific's most marvellous beaches.
Tanna Island is acclaimed for having the world's most accessible active volcano, Mount Yasur.
Here you will also find a giant banyan tree, which is said to be the world’s largest living organism
The reason for the Volcano activity is that country sits on the west edge of the Pacific Plate and right next to the eight thousand meter deep New Hebrides Trench.
This marks the point where the Indo Australian Plate slips under the Pacific Plate and the power of earth plate tectonics comes into play.
The islands are being pushed laterally 10 centimeters a year in a northwest direction, triggering off earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Records show that over the past three million years Vanuatu has been uplifted by approximately seven hundred meters, at approximately two millimeters a year. Stay around long enough and you might just see it growing.
On the island during your Vanuatu holidays you will be able to witness and maybe join in many of their local customs such as drinking Kava and wearing a namba.
Scuba diving is very popular here as is windsurfing, surfing, parasailing, kayaking or riding ajet-ski. Another water related option is to charter a yacht for some sea game fishing.
Many resorts cater for the different needs of their visitors.
Other active sports to pursue are horseback riding, cycling or walking. Or how about abseiling down a waterfall or trekking into a volcanoe.
If that’s to strenuous then just take it easy and sit in a café and adapt to the pace of life here, laze by a pool or on a beautiful tropical beach.
Vanuatu tourism is all about chilling out and watching the sun rise and set on another beautiful Vanuatu day.
